What does abstinence-based recovery mean?

The premise of abstinence-based recovery is to live life without any alcohol, drugs or narcotic / abused medications beyond detox. It’s defined as complete cessation from substance abuse of any kind. According to SAMHSA abstinence-based treatment is the safest approach to treating drug addiction. For those with chronic alcoholism/addiction, drinking or using in moderation will not be possible due to the body’s “abnormal reaction” called the phenomenon of craving. Abstinence-based recovery has proven over decades to be the most successful method for hundreds of thousands of people looking to get their lives back on track. Abstinence also ensures that those in recovery do not develop another addiction to another substance, essentially swapping out one addiction for another.
